A mythology of knives. Installation view. PH: Augusto Zanela. 2024
The street corners of Buenos Aires served as a set for a style of local dance fight: “esgrima criolla” (argentine fencing). There is a myth that says that the chamfer style corners of the city were originated to let the “compadritos” see their rivals coming from the distance, so they could have a clean and honorable duel.
A mythology of knives rescues a local fighting art form to rethink its performative dimension, putting emphasis in its history, action and movements. The project was made with the collaboration of amateur fighters that preserve and practice the discipline.
In a street corner near the riverside, two “guapos” fight for their honor in a knife duel. This video installation in black and white is shaped after a chamfer corner and is a homage to argentine classical films from the 30s and 40s.
